More than 60 people attended last Friday's meeting at the Larruperz Centre to consider the formation of a Sports Council for Ross.
It was decided to call the new organisation the Ross on Wye Sports and Leisure Foundation and those present voted unanimously for the new organisation to coordinate the development and expansion of sporting and leisure activities in Ross and surrounding districts.
Calling it a federation would avoid confusion with existing councils and also emphasise the importance of collective action to achieve the goals of putting Ross on the sporting map. A draft constitution was approved, subject to amendment at a later meeting when the structure of the membership will be finalised.
Councillor John Edwards, who called the meeting on behalf of the Ross Town Council, was elected chairman, Teresa Warwick, secretary. Penny Harris was co-opted as treasurer.
Councillor Edwards said the very good attendance showed that there is a great deal of interest in expanding sporting and leisure activities, especially for the young. It would not only benefit local residents, but also boost the status of the town in the eyes of tourists and encourage investment by businesses.
The Federation will provide a focal point for planning new ventures, as well as dealing with existing problem areas such as the Wilton Sports Centre.
He added: “Now the hard work begins in translating the enthusiasm shown at the meeting into positive action. The Federation will operate completely independently of the Town Council”. He said that anyone who was unable to attend the meeting, but would like to help, or nominate a trustee, should contact him at 01989 769090 or email john@edwardswyenet.co.uk
