A DNA sampling project which Forest people are being asked to take part in, will decide once and for all on our ancestry.
And the leader of the ‘People of the British Isles' project, which is backed by the Welcome Trust, says this ‘unique and interesting area' of the country will have far-reaching effects on future medical treatments.
Dr Bruce Winney of Oxford wants Foresters who know for certain that their grandparents came from this area to give a blood sample at the Heritage Museum on Sunday (noon – 4pm October 15).
“Latest theories suggest that rather than overwhelming the Britons, the Anglo Saxons came in relatively small numbers but held the sway of power. If this is true, large areas of Britain could still well have Ancient British heritage.” He said.
“The Anglo Saxons seem to have stopped at the Welsh borders, which makes the Forest of Dean very interesting, especially with the physical barriers of the rivers.
“As well as proving if Foresters are British stock or an Anglo Saxon mix, the DNS ‘markers' could have a far-reaching impact on treatment of inherited diseases. Of course, an individual's DNA details will be strictly confidential and records will not be passed on, just the research findings.”
