Jilly's top marks for headmaster   05/06/2006

Reproduced from the The Ross Journal Wednesday May 31st 2006
The head at John Kyrle High School couldn’t believe his eyes when he opened up Jilly Cooper’s new best selling novel to see himself named as one of the ‘great headteachers’ in the acknowledgements.

The novelist, renowned for her racy books, called Nigel Griffiths while she was researching her new book Wicked – A Tale of Two Schools.

A section of her novel focuses on the Queen visiting a school, and Jilly wanted to find out about the protocol for a royal visit.

The Queen visited John Kyrle High School three years ago and was welcomed by staff and children waving flags. Mr Griffiths and the head girl made speeches for her and they talked about their links with schools in Uganda.

Mr Griffiths has been headteacher at the school since September 2000. He was shown his special appearance in the book by a member of staff who was reading it.

“I didn’t know she (Jilly) was going to credit me. I think it’s great and I showed everyone I know. I’ll be buying the book this weekend,” he said.

Jilly Cooper’s Wicked is currently the number one fictional bestseller.
